2004 Yamaha BT 1100 Bulldog – Motorcycle
So like many Yamahas before, the BT1100 Bulldog is a tool that resists conventional definition. Original-schmoriginal, the BT1100 is also a fine example of progressive motorcycle design, from its stubby proportions and bold shapes down to the abundance of amazing fine details. Further strengthening that sporty image are those R1 brakes, beefy right-way-up forks and a 170-section rear tire. Confused? A little fumbling with the choke lever under the tank and we have the engine running. What does make riding the Bulldog a bit more interesting enginewise is that the peak torque point has been shifted from a lowly 2500 rpm in the Drag Star, to some 4500 in the BT1100.
The erect riding position works superbly and allows for easy scanning of the surroundings without any neck breaking contortions needed, an important virtue in the world’s fashion capital, where model types seem to grow on trees. Steering-wise, the wide handlebars produce instant steering response in tight situations and hide well the considerable mass of this well-trained Bulldog. Time to hit the highways and the canyon roads.
Our photo rider surmises if his “lard factor” is worthy of the BT1100. The 506 pounds Yamaha cites as the bike’s dry weight, and the slightly underdamped fork eventually start to be felt when the pace picks up. In the braking department, the BT1100 doesn’t need any excuses. It’s R1 derived brakes need no introduction and supply ample power and feel in any situation. Illegally parked, the Bulldog casts a menacing, yet economical, glare amongst the Italian shoppers.

2002 Yamaha TDM 900 – Motorcycle
The new TDM900′s liquid-cooled parallel-twin DOHC 5-valve engine features a large number of significant changes that not only increase power and torque output, but also help reduce emissions, improve fuel economy, and further enhance the bike’s already impressive all-round versatility. As well as producing significantly more torque at 6,000rpm, the new TDM900 engine also delivers much higher levels of low to mid-range pulling power for even stronger all-round versatility. Complementing the increase in engine size and power output are a number of new lightweight engine internals. In order to obtain optimal all-round performance from the more powerful engine, Yamaha’s engineers have equipped the TDM900 with a new 6-speed transmission and uprated clutch that offer improved shifting characteristics compared with the TDM850. The TDM900′s 6-speed design uses a slightly lower 1st gear than the TDM850′s 5-speed transmission, and runs with closer ratios between 2nd and 6th for improved all-round performance. With a ratio of 0.923, top gear on the TDM900 is higher than top gear on the TDM850, and this new 6th gear allows the new-generation TDM to cruise at lower rpm than its 5-speed predecessor at any given speed. The Electronic Fuel Injection ensures efficient engine performance at higher altitudes, while the increased combustion efficiency reduces the engine’s overall fuel consumption to give an extended range from the 20 litre fuel tank, and for reliable starting in a variety of conditions the system is eqwi an automatic choke.

2003 Yamaha TDM 900 – Motorcycle
Yamaha’s TDM900 is one of those mythical ’do-it-all’ motorbikes, which can tour, commute and get the adrenaline pumping on a twisty road. It’s also refreshingly easy to ride, even for a relative biking novice. Alastair Walker checks out the 2003 incarnation of Yamaha´s long distance parallel twin. You see the thing with all-rounders like the smooth TDM900, is that they are motorcycles you can simply ride, anywhere, anytime. Yep, this is a bike you want to ride, for the pleasure of clocking up the miles, rather than the jealous glances of your less wealthy/mental acquaintances. If that sounds sensible to you, then I reckon you´ll love the TDM. By sharp, I mean capable of riding fast and staying well away from near death experiences. The TDM has a 897cc, four stroke, liquid cooled motor making 85bhp, at 8,000rpm. Plenty of mid-range power for road use. The engine is torquey, yet silky smooth, thanks to its unique firing order, lighter internals (than the old TDM850), the efficient fuel injection system and a brilliant, slick, six speed gearbox. The clutch is pretty light in its action too, making the TDM so very easy to ride through town traffic jams. The forks and monoshock can feel slightly soft, but only when you really drive the bike hard into corners on its superb brakes. Overall, the TDM has lost about 20lbs and is now about 190Kgs dry – but the bike doesn´t feel that heavy, at any speed. The only obvious improvement the TDM900 could use for everyday comfort is a higher screen on the little bikini fairing. Despite having sensibly low exhausts, the TDM900 also has plenty of ground clearance -you can have fast fun on this thing.
